Dangerous Drugs Attorneys - Advair and Serevent
in Philadelphia and Reading, Pennsylvania
Advair and Serevent, approved in 2000 to treat asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, contain the active ingredient Salmeterol, a chemical used for long-term dilation of the airways. This chemical is associated with serious and sometimes fatal side effects, and has prompted the issuance of several FDA warnings.
The dangers of Salmeterol have been known for some time. A research study was conducted in 1996 to measure the effects of salmeterol drugs. Of the 13,179 people using the dangerous drug, 13 suffered fatal asthma attacks brought on by the medication itself. The risk of suffering a fatal asthma attack from salmeterol drugs was found to be even greater in the African American population.
In August 2003, the FDA ordered the inclusion of a warning on all Advair and Serevent product information. This warning informs patients about the risk of suffering a fatal asthma attack while taking these medications. In July 2005, an FDA advisory panel formed to evaluate the safety of salmeterol asthma medications. Although the panel voted unanimously to keep these drugs on the market (stating that the benefits outweigh the risks), they did notate that salmeterol drugs “…may increase the chance of severe asthma episodes and death when those episodes occur.”
If you have been affected by the dangerous side effects associated with Advair or Serevent, you may be entitled to compensation and should consult a dangerous drug attorney to discuss your options.
