The Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings system is based on the confidential opinions of members of the Bar Association and the Judiciary, including both those who are rated and those who are not. Representatives of Martindale-Hubbell conduct personal interviews and compile the opinions collected from various sources in order to form a consensus. Lawyers who are under review are sometimes asked to provide professional references to assist with the process. In addition, confidential questionnaires are sent to lawyers and judges in the same geographic location and / or area of practice as the lawyer being rated.
Two components comprise each Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Rating: legal ability and general ethical standards. The first component takes into consideration the standard of professional ability in the area of practice, including the attorney's expertise, and other professional qualifications. The legal ability rating can fall into one of three categories. A rating of "A" is very high to preeminent, a "B" is high to very high, and a "C" is good to high. The second component denotes adherence to professional standards of conduct and ethics, reliability, diligence and other criteria to the discharge of the professional responsibilities. The general recommendation rating is "V", meaning very high.
When both components of the Peer Review Ratings are confirmed, a lawyer receives a CV, BV or AV Rating. For Dufallo, his AV Rating signifies his legal abilities are of the very highest standard and recognizes him as a highly respected, ethical member of the Bar.
