  • Byetta- is an injectable medicine to improve glucose with Type 2 Diabetes patients. Was associated with pancreatitis and pancreatitis related deaths.
  • Calaxo- introduced in 2006. Used mainly for ACL tears in knees. Screws had a tendency to break off inside body and cause painful complications
  • Chantex- used by many in an effort to quit smoking. Caused psychological problems such as hostility, depression and suicidal tendencies
  • Darvocet/Darvon- a propoxyphene based drug used as a pain killer, Use of this drug may increase heart problems and overuse could lead to suicide and overdose
  • Denture cream- kind of adhesive used by people who wear dentures. Excessive use of this substance can cause elevated levels of zinc which can lead to neuropathy and other neurological problems.
  • Fosamax- a drug prescribed to people who suffer from osteoporosis. FDA linked the use of this drug with femur fractures and also are jaw disorder called osteonecrosis along with exposed bone and jaw infection.
  • Gadolinium- a contras agent used in MRI/MRA. This injection can cause kidney problems and cause a fatal skin disease called Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis.
  • Guidant Defibrillator- a device implanted in cardiac patients used to monitor heartbeats. Defective devices can short circuit causing death
  • Hips: Stryker & Zimmer- device made of metal used in many hip replacement surgeries. The devise often caused pain w/ walking or squeaking noises with walking and often lead to additional surgeries to repair.
  • Knees: Zimmer– an implant used in knee replacements. Implant would often loosen and would require revision surgery to repair implant
  • Kugel Mesh- used in hernia repairs. One of the components, the memory recoil ring can loosen and break off which can lead to bowel perforation or bowel obstructions.
  • Levaquin, an antibiotic– use of the drug can cause tendon injuries and damage, often the Achilles tendon.
  • Mesothelioma- the most serious of all asbestos-related diseases. Not as rare as it once was. Primary cause and major risk factor is exposure to asbestos.
  • Multaq- medication used to treat heart problems and those who are at risk for serious heart issues. Medication can cause liver injury or permanent damage
  • Oral Sodium Phosphate (Fleet)- laxative often used in preparation for colonoscopies and other medical procedures. Laxative in large doses has been linked to the development of a serious form of kidney damage known as Acute Phosphate Nephropathy.
  • Pain pumps- device used often in shoulder surgeries to distribute pain medicines at an hourly rate to the direct wound site or to the nerves surrounding the wound area. The medicine has been recently linked to killing cartilage cells also known as, Chondrolysis.
  • Paxil- an antidepressant that has been linked to suicide, suicidal ideation and violence in children and teenagers. Teenages and children who are prescribed this drug need to be closely monitored.
  • Transvaginal Mesh Implants- used to treat Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) and Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP). Complications include: pain, bleeding, infection, urinary problems, pain during sex, emotional problems, vaginal scarring, vaginal shrinkage, organ perforation, recurring POP, as well as mesh erosion, exposure, extrusion and protrusion.
  • Yaz / Yasmin- new form of contraception for woman. Serious side effects include blood clots, stroke, and heart attack along with gall bladder disease and pancreatitis.
  • James Zagroda- Health & Compensation Act- bill that Congress developed to help 9/11 victims. This act - would provide medical monitoring and treatment to people suffering serious diseases because of exposure to toxic debris from Ground Zero. Recipients of this would include emergency responders, recovery and clean-up workers, as well as World Trade Center neighbors.
