Vioxx
On September 30, 2004, Merck & Company announced they would withdraw Vioxx, their popular arthritis pain relief drug. This action came following a recent clinical trial of 2,600 patients. The study showed that those using Vioxx for 18 months or more were at twice the risk for heart attack and stroke. The medical community has long held concerns that Vioxx had potentially severe side effects but Merck had previously maintained that Vioxx was safe.
